THE "WATCH-OUT" SOCIAL MEDIA TRENDS 2014

IDEA-BASED ECOSYSTEMS

The primary reason people use social media is to showcase their own identities. It's essentially like a giant selfie. This is why a local cupcake shop will get more Facebook likes than a local construction company. It's a reflection of who we are. Any time you can tie your brand to the identity of the customer, you'll have a win on your hands.

THE AGE OF INFORMATION OVERLOAD
In recent years, people have gone from information hunger to information overload. People would almost rather give out their social security number than their email addresses. But if you can become the go-to source for relevant information on a specific topic, customers will seek you out like they reach out to Upworthy and Pinterest.
SELL IT IN THE VIDEO

Internet users are more likely to finish a 30-minute video than they are an article. If you're not using online video, you're missing a big part of your audience. Plus, customers are increasingly making purchases directly through videos. A few examples: a new service called Insay and Target's "Falling for You" video campaign.

THE 4-SCREEN REVOLUTION
Consumers frequently use multiple devices at once--TV, mobile phone, laptop, and tablet. It wouldn't be pretty surprising if in 10 years, all that might be one device, but in the next two to five years, we actually expect an increase in the number of devices we are using at once. For companies, the challenge is to find ways to interact with users on multiple screens and to cope with ever-shrinking attention spans.
DECODING DIGITAL SIGNALS

Analytics are very significant to understand customers and change ways on how best to reach them. If 50 percent of your traffic is from mobile and your website isn't optimized for mobile phones, you're going to lose half of your traffic right there.

BUILD THAT SOCIAL LITERACY

All of your employees need to be social media savvy, not just the social media team. Each individual should be a creator, curator, and connector, and organizations should focus on agility, aggregation, and adaptability. Above all, people should be posting content that is relevant to the customer. You don't want to be like the person on Facebook who only shares updates about their dog.

THE POWER OF REVERSE-ENGINEERING

Companies should look beyond their own niches and industries when it comes to marketing ideas. Sometimes a company in an entirely different industry will have a great marketing tactic that none of your competitors have ever considered. So, watch out and think outside your comfort zone! Here's a good example!

HARNESSING THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA

A stolen bike could take weeks or months to retrieve, if it comes back at all. But Christian Garnette had his back in just a day.

Rather than reporting the theft to police last Tuesday after the 23-year-old Toronto man realized his bike was stolen, he turned to complete strangers on the Internet to help find it.

He posted a picture of his bicycle on the Facebook group of a local fixed gear shop around 3:30 a.m., asking if anyone had seen it since it went missing near the corner of Parliament Street and King Street East. All that remained was the front wheel and lock of the bright white bike.

“I had a feeling I would actually get it back because my bike stands out a lot and it’s kind of hard to disguise,” Mr. Garnette said.

Just 10 hours later, someone commented on his post with a photo of the bike six blocks away at Parliament Street and Gerrard Street East, locked and with a new front wheel.

I had a feeling I would actually get it back because my bike stands out a lot and it’s kind of hard to disguise

The stranger and his friend guarded the bike until two men arrived, claiming to have purchased the bike themselves. After a brief dispute, they were told Mr. Garnette, the rightful owner, was on his way, and conceded the bike as well as the replacement tire, for good measure.

“It was a different experience,” Mr. Garnette said. “I already lost two bikes. I even have a video of a guy stealing one of my bikes because my sister used to live in a condo and I ended up getting the footage from the concierge, but yet that was still not enough for the police to get my bike back. It feels like a Facebook group is easier.”

More than 3,400 bicycles in Toronto were reported stolen in 2012, according to Toronto Police Services. This was roughly 300 more than the previous year.

Jared Kolb, executive director of Cycle Toronto, said the increase in thefts is proportional to the growing number of cyclists in the city.

“There are more people riding than ever before and it is a concern,” Mr. Kolb said. “It’s one of these things where you can buy a really fantastic iron-proof lock, but a thief with unlimited amount of time will be able to get into any lock. It’s best to remove your bicycle from that risk by storing it inside or storing in a [proper bike rack].”

Toronto police spokesman David Hopkinson said many thefts are the result of people not locking their bikes properly to both the front wheel and frame, or sometimes at all.

He said the trend of bike thefts should decrease as people become more aware of prevention resources. This includes a free online Toronto police registry, where people can record their bike’s serial number, located on its lower bracket, which can be used to recover it should it go missing.

Still, many choose not to report their bicycles to police due to a general apathy, Mr. Hopkinson said. This makes it much more difficult for police to retrieve unregistered bikes.

“If there are no leads, then it’s difficult for us to follow them,” he said. “With a car, there’s leads to follow. License plates are everywhere. Bicycles don’t have license plates. There’s something like 23 serial numbers all over the car so even if you ripped the cars apart and you piece it off, we can still identify parts of that car.”
The relatively small size of bicycles also makes them easier to not only steal — but also hide permanently.

But Mr. Kolb said people aren’t necessarily seeing results from police when their bikes are stolen.

“One issue is that the average price of a bicycle in terms of all the competing priorities of the Toronto police are relative,” he said. “For many people, their bicycle is their primary mode of transportation so it’s a crucial part of how they sustain their livelihood.”

Monday marks Toronto’s 25th Bike to Work Day, which encourages people to try cycling as their daily commute mode.

Kelly Patrick, a 46-year-old who moved to Toronto in January from Ottawa, decided she would cycle to work for the first time Wednesday, locking her bike just outside her office building along Front Street East. When she left to go home for the day, it was gone.

If somebody stole your bottle of water, would you call the police? No you wouldn’t because it’s not worth it

Ms. Patrick said she walked to a nearby police station to report the theft, but that the constable at the front desk was unhelpful.

“He took nothing, no data, no stats whatsoever from me, other than he told me to go online,” she said. “I don’t think they take it seriously.”

In a survey conducted by Cycle Toronto, 168 of 303 respondents said their bikes had been stolen, but just 22% had registered them with Toronto police. Less than half reported the theft to police, and of these, 88% didn’t think it was worth it to report it.

Mr. Hopkinson said this was unsurprising.

“If somebody stole your bottle of water, would you call the police? No you wouldn’t because it’s not worth it,” he said. “It’s not worth a lot of money, they don’t believe they’re going to get their bike returned to them, so they think all it is is a hassle to make this report.”

But Ms. Patrick said her six-year-old bike meant more to her.

“It’s something that you own and something you rely on,” she said. “It’s still personal property and maybe that’s the debate you have to weigh. What is the value of having police get into stolen bikes and how else can you tackle this issue?”

GEAR UP FOR TWITTER'S NEW PROFILE!

Announced early last month, the Twitter profile update will soon be required for everyone on the service. Beginning May 28, all Twitter users will have the new profile, which has already been rolled out to new users and some existing users in the past month.
It's unclear how many people currently have the new profile, which features larger profile and header images, new timeline views and the ability to pin a tweet to the top of a profile page. Twitter did not immediately respond to Mashable's request for comment, but based on Twitter reaction to the design change, it appears that a number of users are still using the old layout (and aren't happy about the impending switch).

FACEBOOK LIKE: BEHIND THE SCREEN

Ever since Facebook installed the ‘like’ feature, seeming like you care about what your friends say and think has never been so easy. Just kidding. The Like button was an ingenious idea to quickly and easily get people involved with interesting posts and organizations.

You can attest to this: Like us on Facebook here! Wasn’t that easy? Now you’ll end up with great ideas from the perfect media companion.

WHY FIT-IN WHEN YOU CAN STAND OUT?

Why be “just fine” when you can be awesome online? Try out at least one of our social media tricks and watch what happens to your posts online! Entrepreneurs and marketers are always looking for social media tricks to give them an edge on their competition and to attract more people to their social media sites.

#1  Give people a peek into your life outside of your work

Let’s just face it – we are all voyeurs and often wonder, “What does that person do when they are not talking business?” This is a good strategy because you will find people being attracted to you because of a shared interest or passion.

#2  Use humor

Being serious all the time is boring. Adding some laugh increases engagement levels. Again, a way for others to connect easily to you and a really simple social media trick to use. Try scanning Pinterest for some ideas – that’s a great place on the web to grab some interesting visuals.

#3  vCita pop-up box on your website.
Install a program like vCita on your website. Program it so it pops up when someone comes to your website. vCita, for instance, lets a visitor connect with you immediately and set up an appointment based on your calendar. Use it and do a free 30-minute call with anyone who wants to ask a question related to social media. Visitors simply choose a time that works for them, based on the availability that is put up on your calendar and who knows? Maybe they’ll turn out to be your client! Easy, engaging, and unobtrusive, right?

TIP: If the visitor to your website chooses to close the tab, it won’t pop up for them again while they are on my website.

#4  Make your own quotes
Quote all by yourself. You can use programs like Quozio. All you need to do is extract something brilliant from your blog posts and make a quote out of it. Quozio allows you to save all of your quotes and they have many different templates and fonts. You can share them on different social media sites. Something you wrote may go viral if you’re lucky!

#5  Ask for the like, or share, or subscription.
Don’t be shy. Especially if you make YouTube videos, you can put an annotation on your screen and say the words, “Please subscribe to my channel.” If you don’t ask, you probably won’t get the subscription, especially if you are new on social media.

That was simple right? You don't really need to do all of these at once. Like we said, just one at a time and that'll do the magic. Please don't hesitate to share any other tips with us!

THE DONT'S OF A FACEBOOK PAGE

Are you using your Facebook page as your website? Don’t! It screams amateur. Everybody has a website these days, even if it’s only on WordPress. That’s okay! Not just for bloggers anymore, WordPress sites can be made to look like topnotch professional websites through the use of fabulous and highly versatile themes that can be purchased quite reasonably. But there is a place for blogging… enter, Facebook!

SAVE THE BLOGGING FOR FACEBOOK

Your professional website site is where you will have all the slick ads, graphics and cool themes. Your Facebook page is where you want to do your blogging, post the news happenings and so forth. Make it your friendly page! It’s social networking after all.

That being said, do you actually blog on Facebook? If you don’t then start doing it! Imagine visiting a company’s Facebook page and noticing that it hasn’t been updated in months, or years even. Nothing is more of a turnoff than that. Some companies create a Facebook page with minimal information and then forget about it. Why even bother? We’re not exaggerating in here when we say they are losing out on the opportunity of a lifetime.

Post a really good bargain on your Facebook page and encourage your customers to share it with their friends. You’ll get new customers without having to pay for any advertising. And since you’re not paying for the advertising, you can afford to make it a really enticing bargain. Sounds cool right?

DON'T SPAM YOUR CUSTOMERS

If you post too often on Facebook, friends and customers may not go so far as to unfriend you, but they will turn off your posts, which is like unfriending you without you knowing it. Uhh… that’s bad! We all have friends who seem to have nothing better to do than update their status on Facebook, and they’re just plain annoying. When a business does it, we have no compunction with turning them off.

How frequently should a business post updates to Facebook? Every other day is totally fine to keep your fans engaged. Posts should be interesting and of real value, as well as short and to the point. Some good topics for Facebook updates are significant discount offers, brand new products available, expanded business hours, addition of a new employees, as in a new hairdresser at a salon or masseuse at a spa, or anything else that might be of actual interest to the customers.

SOCIAL MEDIA: HOW IMPORTANT IS IT FOR A BUSINESS?

Most Businesses that use social media as a part of their Marketing strategy treat social media as a broadcasting medium. At first blush, social media feels like a cheap and powerful bullhorn. It is, but don’t be surprised when blasting messages in one direction–from you to them–only generates a trickle of traffic. The trick is to get people involved, and keep them involved.

The Action plan: Since the dawn of retail, sweepstakes and giveaways have been a great hook. For ideas, query contest or sweepstakes or giveaways on Google. Maybe you’ll read about how a computer store sold more laptops by holding a contest for free iPads that required people to make their entry on the store’s Facebook page. Formulate a similar marketing campaign that fits your niche. If you have a bakery, you could hold a contest for free customized birthday cakes by requiring participants to enter on your Facebook page. Voila! Not only have you scared up more customers, you also have an instant focus group to test your cakes and other goodies.

HOOKING UP ON SOCIAL MEDIA?

In this generation powered by the internet and social media, if you go to a job interview it's very likely that within an hour of leaving that office, you'll be “Googled” for. [It's no more called Searching. It's called Googling!]  Opinions don't matter. All of it is just a few clicks away! Whether we like it or not, times have indeed changed.

Let's say a women is interested in a man. During this social media boom, what's the first thing she'd do? She may grab her Mac and do a little investigative research. Well, wouldn't you? With loads of social media networks out there, we give away so much information every single day. And let's be honest, we're all glued to out computers far too much. Let's talk a little but about where you need to be if you're planning to hook up on social media.

P I N T E R E S T

Pinterest, we'd say is a completely useless social media tool when it comes to talking to women. "WOW! I love that car! I better go pin a picture of a box to my Pinterest board!" There are some women who like Pinterest and that's totally fine. Different sexes, different interests. But even those female Pinterest enthusiasts likely wouldn't want a dude who's into it.
In summation, is Pinterest important? Hell no.

G O O G L E +

We heard that if you ever actually see someone using Google Plus, a genie pops up and immediately grants you three wishes. That being said, if you do happen to stumble upon a lovely lady who's a big Google Plus user and you manage to remember your password, perhaps you could use it to your advantage. It'd be much likely if two people were stranded on a deserted island with one another. They have no other options. Sooner or later, these two are gonna get it on, right?

In summation, is Google Plus important? See "Pinterest."

7 SIZZLING TIPS TO GEAR UP ON SOCIAL MEDIA

# 1  On - your - toes!

Be alert. Watch out! Accept the fact that there's millions of people on social media - good and bad.

Image

Know who to connect with and make sure you're doing the right thing. Superman is not gonna come to the rescue if you mess it up! :P

Image

See! :O I told you! You can never figure out who's who on social media :D
You must look INTO other people, as well as, AT them...

# 2  Time  it!

Don't keep flooding your wall with all possible updates or tweets. Yes, it's good to post but that doesn't mean you need to be sitting and staring at your device and wondering what to say next!

Image

Time your posts regularly. Make sure other people's notifications are not just about you.

Image

Oh come on! Let's grow up folks! People will not be happy by listening to you all the time. It's just going to make them lose the interest and run away :P Now tell me, do you really want that?

# 3  Connect!

That's the key to great social networking. P.A.R.T.I.C.I.P.A.T.E. That doesn't mean you can barge in and spam someone's wall just because they're on your friend list. NO! Know when to talk and make sure you let them talk in the conversation. Keep in touch with people you know.
Don't be a loner! Connections do matter
